September 2026 begins in Virgo season, with the effects of the August 28th lunar eclipse in Pisces still very recent. The Sun is moving through Virgo, Mercury has just entered Virgo, Venus is travelling through Libra and Mars remains in Cancer. At the same time Saturn, Neptune and Pluto are retrograde, with Uranus about to join them. There is plenty happening during the month, but the character of September changes noticeably as it progresses.
The opening days have a practical Virgo emphasis. Mercury is in Virgo, one of the signs it rules, while The Sun is also moving through Virgo. Mercury represents our intellect, thoughts and communication, and Virgo can make its influence more careful, analytical and concerned with details. This is a useful period for sorting out problems, checking information and dealing with work that requires concentration rather than rushing towards an answer.
There is also unfinished business from the lunar eclipse in Pisces on August 28th. An eclipse does not simply become irrelevant when the calendar moves into a new month. The Full Moon occurred across the Pisces-Virgo part of the Zodiac, bringing the practical qualities of Virgo up against the more emotional and intuitive qualities associated with Pisces. The beginning of September can therefore feel like a period of adjustment after events or realizations that developed around the eclipse.
Mars provides a rather different influence. It spends most of September in Cancer, where action can become closely connected with home, family and emotional security. Mars represents energy, confidence, ambition and self assertion, but Cancer is much more protective and sensitive. This can make people particularly determined when defending something or someone they care about. It can also mean that irritation is not always expressed directly.
September 7th brings Uranus sextile Neptune. Uranus is associated with change, independence and unconventional ideas, while Neptune has a much less practical nature and is associated with imagination, intuition and things that are difficult to define. As a sextile between two slow moving outer planets, this is not simply a one-day influence. It forms part of a much longer background pattern and is more important collectively than as a brief personal transit.
The middle of September is where several important changes begin to gather together.
On September 11th Uranus turns retrograde in Gemini. Uranus has only recently established itself in Gemini, so its retrograde movement begins a period of reconsideration around changes that have already started to develop. Gemini is connected with communication, information, learning and the exchange of ideas. Uranus can disrupt established patterns and encourage experimentation, but retrograde motion can make some of that change less straightforward.
The same day brings a New Moon in Virgo. New Moons begin a new lunar cycle and are traditionally associated with beginnings. In Virgo, attention turns towards practical improvements, organisation, routines, work and the smaller details that can make a considerable difference over time. This is not necessarily about making dramatic changes. Virgo is often more interested in identifying what does not work and finding a practical way to improve it.
Also on September 11th, Mercury enters Libra. The emphasis of communication starts to move away from Virgo's analysis and towards Libra's concern with balance, fairness and other people's points of view. Decisions can require more consideration because there may be several sides to take into account. This can be useful for negotiation and discussion, although trying too hard to keep everyone happy can make a clear decision more difficult.
Mercury remains particularly active during the following days. Mercury opposes Neptune on September 13th, creating a contrast between clear communication and a planet associated with imagination, uncertainty and illusion. Assumptions need to be treated carefully. Something that sounds convincing may still need to be checked.
By September 15th Mercury forms a trine with Pluto. This has a very different character. Pluto can bring greater depth and intensity, while Mercury governs thought and communication. The combination can encourage looking beneath the surface of a problem rather than accepting the first explanation. Research, serious conversations and subjects that require concentration can become more important.
Venus then becomes one of the main planets to watch.
Venus enters Scorpio on September 19th. Venus is associated with affection, romantic relationships, harmony, pleasure and personal values. Scorpio is considerably more intense and private than Libra, the sign Venus is leaving. Relationships can become less concerned with maintaining an easy surface balance and more concerned with trust, loyalty and what someone really feels. Attraction can become stronger, but so can jealousy or possessiveness when there are already insecurities within a relationship.
This change is particularly important because Venus will later turn retrograde in Scorpio in early October. The September 19th ingress is therefore not simply another quick change of sign. It introduces Venus into an area of the Zodiac that will remain important as relationships, desires and personal values are reconsidered during the weeks that follow.
The final part of September brings another substantial change as Virgo season comes to an end. September 23rd is the Virgo-Libra cusp, followed by The Sun entering Libra on September 24th. Libra season shifts attention towards relationships, cooperation, balance and fairness. The emphasis moves away from Virgo's concern with improvement and practical details and towards the way we deal with other people.
Mars changes signs almost immediately afterwards. On September 25th Mars enters Leo, moving away from the more protective and emotionally reactive qualities of Cancer. Mars and Leo are both much more comfortable with visible action. Confidence, ambition and the desire to take the initiative can become easier to express. There can also be greater pride involved, and disagreements can become more dramatic when someone feels that their position or authority is being challenged.
The Full Moon in Aries on September 27th brings this increasing emphasis on independence into sharper focus. Aries is direct, active and strongly concerned with taking action, while The Sun is now in Libra, a sign concerned with cooperation and balance between people. This creates a clear contrast between what we want for ourselves and what a relationship or partnership requires.
That makes the Full Moon one of the most important points of the month. The question is not simply whether to put yourself or somebody else first. The greater challenge is knowing when compromise is sensible and when too much compromise means giving away something important. Existing disagreements can become much clearer around this time because Aries has little interest in pretending that a problem does not exist. Libra, however, reminds us that getting our own way is not always the same as reaching the best result.
September closes with Mars trine Neptune and Venus square Mars on September 29th. Mars trine Neptune can bring imagination and instinct into the way action is taken. Venus square Mars is much more personal, bringing two planets strongly associated with attraction and relationships into a difficult aspect. Chemistry can be strong, but so can differences between what one person wants and what another is prepared to give.
The retrograde picture is also important throughout September. Saturn remains retrograde in Aries, Neptune remains retrograde in Aries and Pluto remains retrograde in Aquarius. Uranus joins them when it turns retrograde in Gemini on September 11th. With several slow moving planets retrograde at the same time, some of the larger changes taking place during 2026 remain in a period of review rather than moving forward in a simple straight line.
Overall, September 2026 is a month of transition. It begins with strong Virgo influences and the aftermath of the Pisces lunar eclipse, then gradually moves towards Libra and a greater emphasis on relationships and balance. Uranus turns retrograde, Mercury changes signs, Venus enters Scorpio and Mars enters Leo. By the end of the month the astrological picture feels quite different from the one we started with.
The most important development may be the changing relationship between personal needs and relationships with other people. Libra season and the Aries Full Moon make this particularly clear, while Venus moving into Scorpio adds greater emotional depth to relationships. September begins by asking what needs to be improved. It ends by asking what we want, what we are prepared to compromise on and which relationships can accommodate both.
