What Are Decans in Astrology?

What Are Decans in Astrology?

Each of the twelve signs of the Zodiac covers thirty degrees. Decans divide each sign into three smaller sections of ten degrees each. The first decan covers the first ten degrees of a sign, the second decan covers the next ten degrees and the third decan covers the final ten degrees.

This means that two people born under the same Zodiac sign can belong to different decans. They still share the main qualities associated with their sign, but the decan can add another influence and help explain some of the differences between them.

Decans have been used in astrology for a very long time. They provide another way of looking more closely at a Zodiac sign rather than treating everyone born under that sign as exactly the same.

The exact degree of The Sun in a birth chart shows which decan someone was born under. Someone with The Sun near the beginning of a sign will belong to the first decan, while someone born later in the sign can belong to the second or third.

How Are the Decans Divided?

Every Zodiac sign contains thirty degrees. Dividing those thirty degrees into three equal sections creates the three decans.

The first decan runs from 0 degrees to 9 degrees 59 minutes. The second decan runs from 10 degrees to 19 degrees 59 minutes. The third decan runs from 20 degrees to 29 degrees 59 minutes.

Each decan therefore covers ten degrees of the Zodiac. The system repeats through all twelve signs.

This division does not change someone's Zodiac sign. A person with The Sun at 2 degrees Leo and another with The Sun at 25 degrees Leo are both Leo. They simply belong to different Leo decans.

The main qualities of Leo still remain important for both people. The decan adds another influence rather than replacing the sign itself.

Why Are There Three Decans in Each Zodiac Sign?

A Zodiac sign covers a considerable part of the sky. The thirty degrees within that sign allow the planets to occupy very different positions even when they remain in the same sign.

Decans provide a simple way of dividing those thirty degrees into smaller sections. This allows astrologers to look more closely at differences within each sign.

People born under the same sign can have very different personalities. Their complete birth charts will never be exactly the same, and the positions of The Moon and the planets can make a considerable difference.

The decans provide another part of that picture. They can show why some of the qualities of a sign appear more strongly in one person than another and why someone can also display qualities that are less obvious in other people born under the same sign.

The First Decan

The first decan covers the beginning of a Zodiac sign. People born with The Sun in this section can display many of the strongest and most familiar qualities associated with their sign.

The influence of the sign itself is particularly important. Someone born in the first decan of Aries, for example, can show the confidence, independence and determination strongly associated with Aries.

This does not mean that everyone in the first decan will behave in exactly the same way. The Moon, the planets, houses and aspects still need to be considered.

The first decan simply places greater attention on the main qualities of the sign. These qualities can be easier to recognise because there is less additional influence from another sign of the same element.

The Second Decan

The second decan covers the middle ten degrees of a Zodiac sign. The main sign remains important, but another sign belonging to the same element adds an additional influence.

This can create a different balance of qualities. Someone can still clearly display the personality of their main Zodiac sign while also showing characteristics associated with the second influence.

For example, the second decan of a Fire sign remains strongly connected with confidence, enthusiasm and energy, but the additional Fire influence can change the way these qualities are expressed.

This helps explain why two people with the same Zodiac sign can approach similar situations differently. One can be more confident, another more ambitious, while another can place greater importance on independence or freedom.

The second decan does not create a completely different personality. It adds another influence to qualities that are already present.

The Third Decan

The third decan covers the final ten degrees of a Zodiac sign. Like the second decan, it receives an additional influence from another sign belonging to the same element.

Someone born in the third decan can therefore combine the main qualities of their Zodiac sign with characteristics connected with this additional influence.

This can make the third decan feel slightly different from the beginning of the same sign. The basic character of the sign remains, but particular qualities can become stronger or less obvious.

Someone can be more sociable, more practical, more sensitive or more independent than another person born under the same sign. The complete birth chart will provide much more information, but the decan can help explain part of the difference.

Decans and the Four Elements

The four elements are Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Each element contains three Zodiac signs, and these three signs are important when understanding the decans.

Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are Fire signs. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are Earth signs. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are Air signs. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are Water signs.

The three decans of a sign remain connected with the same element. A Fire sign receives additional influence from the other Fire signs, an Earth sign from the other Earth signs, an Air sign from the other Air signs and a Water sign from the other Water signs.

This keeps the basic nature of the element strong while allowing different qualities within that element to become more noticeable.

Fire is associated with confidence, enthusiasm and energy. Earth is practical and seeks security and stability. Air is connected with ideas, communication and social interaction. Water is emotional, sensitive and intuitive.

The decans therefore work within the existing nature of a Zodiac sign rather than introducing an influence that is completely different.

Decans and Ruling Planets

Decans can also be associated with ruling planets. The first decan is strongly connected with the ruling planet of the Zodiac sign itself, while the second and third decans receive additional planetary influences through the other signs of the same element.

This gives each decan another way of expressing the qualities of its sign. A planetary influence can strengthen particular characteristics and place greater attention on particular needs or interests.

Mars, for example, is associated with confidence, energy, ambition and the ability to assert ourselves. Venus is connected with affection, harmony, relationships and pleasure. Mercury is associated with thoughts, communication and reasoning.

Jupiter can bring growth, exploration and optimism, while Saturn is associated with responsibility, restrictions and ambition. Uranus values independence and freedom, Neptune is connected with compassion and imagination, and Pluto can bring endings, beginnings and important changes.

The ruling planet of a decan therefore adds another influence, but it does not replace the ruling planet or qualities of the main Zodiac sign.

Why People With the Same Zodiac Sign Can Be Different

Decans are one reason people born under the same Zodiac sign can appear different, but they are not the only reason.

A birth chart contains The Sun, The Moon, the planets, houses and aspects. Each has its own position and influence. Even people born on the same day can have differences in their charts if they were born at different times or in different places.

The Sun sign remains an important part of personality, but it is only one part of the complete birth chart. The decan divides that Sun sign into a smaller section and provides additional information.

This can help explain why one Taurus appears particularly stubborn while another is more practical and another places greater importance on ambition. They all remain Taurus, but other influences can change the balance of their characteristics.

Decans therefore provide more detail without changing the basic meaning of a Zodiac sign.

How Do I Find My Decan?

To find your decan you need to know the degree occupied by The Sun in your birth chart.

If The Sun is between 0 degrees and 9 degrees 59 minutes of your Zodiac sign, you are in the first decan. If it is between 10 degrees and 19 degrees 59 minutes, you are in the second decan. If it is between 20 degrees and 29 degrees 59 minutes, you are in the third decan.

The position of The Sun can be calculated from your date, time and place of birth. An ephemeris can also show the position of The Sun for a particular date.

People born close to the point where one decan changes into another need the exact degree rather than simply relying on a date. The Sun does not enter each degree at exactly the same time every year.

Knowing the exact position removes any uncertainty and shows which ten-degree section contains The Sun.

Are Decans the Same as Different Zodiac Signs?

A decan does not give someone another Zodiac sign. Someone born under Gemini remains Gemini regardless of whether The Sun is in the first, second or third Gemini decan.

The additional sign associated with a decan is an influence rather than a replacement. It can strengthen or change the way some characteristics are expressed, but the main Zodiac sign remains the same.

This is important because astrology contains many different influences. Adding more information does not mean that the original position disappears.

The same principle applies throughout a birth chart. The Moon does not replace The Sun, and the influence of Venus does not remove the influence of Mars. Different positions work together and create the complete picture.

Decans work in the same way. They provide another influence within the Zodiac sign that is already present.

What Do Decans Mean in Astrology?

Decans divide each of the twelve Zodiac signs into three sections of ten degrees. They allow astrologers to look more closely at differences between people who share the same Sun sign.

The first decan is most strongly connected with the main qualities and ruling planet of the sign. The second and third decans add influences connected with the other signs and planets belonging to the same element.

These additional influences can change the balance of someone's characteristics without changing their Zodiac sign. They can help explain why people born under the same sign do not all have exactly the same personality.

Decans are only one part of astrology. The complete birth chart, including The Sun, The Moon, planets, houses and aspects, provides far more information about an individual.

Their value comes from providing greater detail. Instead of treating thirty degrees of a Zodiac sign as exactly the same, decans divide the sign into three smaller sections and show how different influences can become stronger as The Sun moves through the Zodiac.
